Project 2:

Reinventing Global learning with Skype in the Classroom!

Bridging the World and your Classroom, a project that allowed students to learn and experience the world, diverse societies, culture, practices, Educational views, economic conditions, environmental hazards through the native perspective. Guest Speakers from various countries like the United States, UAE, Argentine, Egypt, Australia, Czech Republic, Nigeria, Philippines etc. Students interacted with Expert Teachers who taught them more about their country and it was a great experience for them to listen and learn from the natives itself. Students even got to interact with Shark4Kids , an NGO Group who specialize in educating young children about Sharks, how to Tag them, showed them different kinds of Sharks and also shared with them the real experience via videos and live shots. They encouraged Young Children on how we can protect and conserve them. Students were elated to learn about Sharks and the Julianne Morris, one of the founders of the group encouraged them to become Biological Scientist and to be a part of the new generation of shark advocates through access to a dynamic range of educational materials. Curriculum, games and activities will allow teachers to integrate shark education into their science programs on an introductory, intermediate or advanced level.

Global Learning is concerned with exploring the interconnections between people and places around the world. It asks us to observe the similarities and differences that exist around our world today and relate these to our own lives. It is not an 'additional subject' to cram into an overcrowded curriculum but goes the heart of what education is for:

"The global dimension explores what connects us to the rest of the world. It enables learners to engage with complex global issues and explore links between their own lives and people, places and issues throughout the world. The global dimension can relate to both developing and developed countries. It helps learners to imagine different futures and the role they can play in creating a fair and sustainable world."

By including the global dimension in teaching, links can easily be made between local and global issues and young people are given the opportunity to:

  • Critically examine their own values and attitudes

  • Appreciate the similarities between peoples everywhere, and learn to value diversity

  • Understand the global context of their local lives

  • Develop skills that will enable them to combat injustice, prejudice and discrimination

The Project serves the purpose of Global Learning or Global Citizenship as it teachers students all the relevant areas that really matter. As an Educator who steered the project i am extremely happy as my students learn something very useful from their experience.

Project Outcome!

Project details:

Students were divided into groups with mixed ability. Each group has two researchers, a photographer, two recorders, one interviewer. Students practiced inquiry based educational approach where they have to probe a brief study on the concerned country. They record the questions that has to asked and recorded. Students gained not only knowledge though these session as they keep on investigating about the geographical location of various countries. The passion to learn more is ignited and they enjoyed learning from a local but an expert  educator. Technology helped them to learn more about different countries and students

concentrated on learning through their experience rather just build knowledge. Students asked brilliant questions during the session to learn more from the speaker.
